2 Timothy

In the last post we looked at some of the prophecies which are written in the Bible, which have a lot to do with what we will be witnessing soon. There are more, which is what we'll look at in this post. Some of these are close to happening, or are happening now. Many things happening in the world are being shown in the secular news, with no reference to what the Bible has to say, but I find it interesting that many of these happenings have already been written about and foretold in the Bible.

One of the most vivid descriptions of the times we are living in now can be found in 2 Timothy 3:1-9

Godlessness in the Last Days

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth—men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.

Now people may argue that we've had these kinds of people all throughout the ages, that there have always been hateful behavior from people. While that is true, there will be worse to come, and we are seeing the beginning of it.

We witnessed some of this behavior within the past year, with political greed and personal irresponsibility from people who thought they were entitled to something more than they could afford, in the housing collapse. While I'm not going into the whole story, as it's old news, it does show that love of money, power, and proud behavior is alive and well in Washington and all around the world. Governments the world over are displaying reprehensible and greedy behaviors- everything from mass murder of their own people, building weapons to destroy others, letting their people starve while they live in luxury.

Even in America we have so called leaders who are corrupt, using their positions in government for their own gain and interests. From lobby groups to so called community organizers who are out for their own benefit while claiming to be working for the poor and disadvantaged. We've seen crime among young kids and teenagers sky rocket, and many of the crimes are brutal, evil and totally without conscience. People are showing no self control when they are piling on debt on credit. They are showing no self control when being sexually promiscuous- and our society has displayed it's utter disregard for life when we allow our children to be murdered in the womb from conception all the way to the point of being able to survive after birth. We have allowed these "compassionate" people let those unfortunate babies who survive the burning saline and the butcher's knives- to die unaided, cold, hungry and in pain in a garbage can.

In our hyper sexual society, we can see that people are lovers of pleasure with no thoughts of consequences, no thoughts of the impact on the rest of society.Perhaps the biggest of all is having a form of godliness but denying its power. The church has become any place except a place of corporate worship. We have churches which are hip and trendy cafe style, or even in bars- a ear tickling, feel good all inclusive, non judgemental social clubs. Everything is taught at many of these churches, from how to have your best life now, to helping the poor- but for the love of pete! DO NOT proselytize! They are learning how to connect to the inner christ, how to meditate on the feeling of spirit, to love mother earth and build a utopia where we all get along. Not often will anything be said about Christ, the cross or sin and redemption.

We have garbage worming it's way into our homes via TV. Now, I don't have cable where I live, nor do I have satellite. On just the 5 or so channels we do have, is garbage enough. Daytime TV is virtually nothing but depraved people, sad people airing their sin to those they supposedly love on national airwaves. From everything from Maury to Judge Judy, people are willing to display their degenerate behavior for all to see. Night time is not much better with shows like 2 and a Half Men, Sex in the City and other trash.

We have people from all parts of society always learning, and many are shown the truth, but they reject it. It is only going to get worse, and unfortunately many people will still be rejecting the truth until He comes again. They will be acknowledging at last the truth, on their knees before Him, but by then it will be too late for them.
The prophecies in the Bible- or for that matter, the whole Word exists so we don't have to live rejecting Him. It is His revealing Himself to us through His Word, He shows us in this world of His Glory. You don't have to reject the truth.

The world is heading towards it's end. Someday soon, Christ will make a new heaven and new earth. After God's warnings for the past millennium through His prophets, we are all facing the one decision. Are we for Him and Truth, or are we going to live out the word of Timothy?

I'm sorry, this is longer than I intended- I will post more soon, finishing up the current happening prophecies.

  1. And as the president of Moody Bible Institute claims, the 'spirit of this devil driven world' has infiltrated INTO THE CHURCH! And we can see the selfish, greedy, rude behavior there now too.
We can wish it were not so, and we all want to have many Christian friends to up build us and encourage us-- but we MUST grow closer to Jesus, most of all, and now.

  2. I full agree with you on a couple of points, Carolyn.

Firstly, that these prophecies could have been applied to any time in world history. Literally any time. In fact, compared to seem eras, our present situation isn't that bad (relatively speaking).

Secondly, TV is rubbish. Utter, unmitigated rubbish. The best show on TV is Wipeout and that says quite a lot.

    Cheers,

  3. Smiling at your comment about TV Matt! :-) I do agree too with your other comment, but as applied with the rest of prophecies, it shows that we are living in what the Bible says are the end of times. Thanks Matt~

  4. Carolyn,

I asked another Christian (Wayne Dawg from Dawg on the Lawn) about these prophecies that revealed that we were in the 'End Times' and he produced 42 of them. We rather quickly whittled these down to 3 that you could only really apply in the modern age.

What are the three prophecies that you feel are definitively referring to the age we are in and couldn't have been true before?

    Thanks,

  5. @ ExPatMatt:

I think the generalization of the apocalyptic prophecies was intended to be exactly that, but that's my opinion. I also think many of the prophecies have been fulfilled, save the second coming itself.

In any event, the church from the first century on has expected Jesus' immediate return, and that's the way He explicitly wanted it: to keep His bride on her toes.

    Think of this scenario:

"And Jesus said in the year 2015, in the third month, the fifth day of the month, 'I shall return in refulgent glory.'"

How would the church of the former centuries have acted in His absence?

Knowing a bit of human nature, I think the former centuries would have resembled Mardi Gras or Spring Break, up until the final year.

As it is, Jesus told us there would be signs, and I think Carolyn and others are dead-right to point us to the urgency of the need to repent, even as Christians: act and live as if our Lord were about to return. What would you want Him catching you doing?

  6. @ ExPM:

One of the "fulfilled" prophecies are the destruction of the Jerusalem temple, which occurred in 70 A.D.

At the writing of the NT, it hadn't happened yet.

  7. Brazen,

I'm asking for specific prophecies that could only be considered relevant in the present day.

I often see Christians writing 'clearly these are the end times...' or a variant thereof and I'm wondering what the basis for this conclusions is. The temple being destroyed 1,939 years ago is not really an indicator that we're in the End Times, is it!

I agree that it makes sense not to set a date, for the reasons you suggested, and that it's good that everyone is acting as if it could be any day now but that's not why I'm asking.

I'm asking because when I see Christians talk about current affairs and then casually announce that this is evidence that we're in the End Times I want to know what they're basing this on.

If it's 'wars and rumours of wars' then I'm very unimpressed because there hasn't been a decade in human history when there hasn't been a war!

So, what are your top three prophecies that indicate that the End is Nigh?

    Cheers,

  8. Matt, those are excellent questions, and I can totally understand anyone asking. While I haven't had as much time as I'd like to spend on this blog, I am trying to "regather" my notes from a previous series I did a few years ago on AOL journals.
Specific prophecies- I will go into more detail later, but there are a few which come to my mind right now.
One, is from the Book of Daniel. That book is rich in prophecies which came to pass centuries after he wrote about them, such as the future empires (past ones now to us) but also of the future (still future, but happening now) of the revival of the Roman Empire. The European Union is a huge development which has been going on for quite some time, but as yet it is not comprising of ALL the old Roman Empire. However, The EU is reaching out to the Arab League nations which many of were once a part of the Roman Empire.
Another, is again from Daniel, when he is told to close up the seal, the words of thh scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowlege. It is non debatable that this past century has brought more technologies than any other age. In the past few decades there has been more increase than in the past century. Information is everywhere, and can be accessable in seconds from anywhere in the world. Put these in context with what is described by John in Revelation about the mark or seal of the antichrist- which in his time was like science fiction.
As Brazen pointed out, the Temple was prophecied to be destroyed- and it was. It is also prophecied that there will be another Temple- for the antichrist to some day sit in it and declare himself god- there has to be, and also concerning Israel in the end days, there will be a resuming of the Temple sacrifices.
Jews have not been able to do sacrifices since the day the Temple was destroyed. There are Rabbis and Levitical Priests being prepared for Temple Sacrifices according to the Torah, and many of the Temple items have been remade according to law. All will be ready once the Temple is remade and rededicated.
Jesus talks about more earthquakes in various places, and looking at geographical and seismological sites, you can see the increase in earthquakes every decade and all over the world. He talks about persecution of the saints-His believers. There is more and more persecution of Christians than of any other religious people. All over the world. Which of course also goes along with what He said about the Gospel being preached in all nations, tribes and tongues.
I can't possibly go into all details right here and now, and looking at one or a few of the prophecies individually may or may not point to anything except "coincidence" but taken all together, and seeing things happen as Jesus said- as like birth pangs, the signs are becoming more and more clear. The main being the regathering of Israel, since then things have been happening. Slowly at first, but within the past few years, like contractions- they have been coming closer together and more intense.
Please keep reading, as I will try to keep posting regularily!

Oh, one more thought. I know there have always been wars and rumors of war, but again, taken in context with the Biblical prophecies, they are happening and rumored in the countries the Bible talks about. And in the past century, there have been more wars than at any other time. Again, keeping eyes on Iran and Israel. It's all in the Bible.
